Skin damage to the hands of medical staff is a common cause of days lost to illness. According to a Swiss survey, 18% of time taken off for illness by healthcare staff is due to hand skin damage. From this study, it is estimated that dermatitis associated with frequent hand cleansing causes in excess of 2.3 million days lost by staff absence and costs the NHS approximately £300 million.
