LMA Gastro: supporting safe endoscopy procedures and efficient service

An innovation aimed at reducing the risk of adverse events in upper-GI endoscopy has been developed, providing a safe and effective airway device.

Current data shows that the rate of overall reported adverse events in upper-GI endoscopy is 1:2001 and studies from around the world report that hypoxemia occurs in: 11-50% of endoscopy cases. 2-4

Professor Marcus Skinner, an Australian anaesthetist, created the concept of the LMA Gastro drawing on years of experience of managing airways during upper GI endoscopy procedures. His vision was to have a safe and effective airway device to use during endoscopy procedures.

Torino et al (2016) emphasised that: “During [deep] sedation the airway protective reflexes and respiratory function are impaired. Thus, airway management with dedicated devices is needed. This clinical setting requires anaesthesiological skill.” 3

The LMA Gastro is the only LMA available that is dedicated for use during upper GI endoscopy procedures and is currently being used across the UK for ERCPs, OGDs, TOEs and other endoscopy procedures.

Product features include:

  • Integrated endoscope channel to allow direct endoscopic access without having to manoeuvre the endoscope.
  • Integrated Bite Block.
  • Adjustable Holder and Strap and clip – maintains the device in a neutral position during endoscope manipulation.
  • Silicone Airway; Designed for smooth insertion and patient comfort. soft, flexible and able to conform to patient anatomy.
