Recruitment day injects interest in hospital careers

Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is to hold another thought-provoking recruitment day – this time aimed at nurses, midwives, support staff and those thinking of entering the professions.

The event will take place between 9.30am and 3.30pm on Saturday 9 February 2019, and comes hot on the heels of an event in October 2018 aimed at Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) such as speech and language therapists, dieticians and diagnostic radiographers.

There will be a wide range of workshops, displays and tours of key areas in the hospital. Visitors will get the chance to have their arms plastered by the emergency team and call into theatres to “glove and gown up”.

The cardiology team will explain what an abnormal heart rate looks like, the oncology department will demonstrate some of their specialist equipment and paediatrics will discuss how they use play as a way of helping young patients through treatments.

Nurses at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Trust, which includes Addenbrooke’s and The Rosie, work in specialisms including paediatrics, emergency care, critical care, medical, surgical, neuro, oncology, midwifery and research.

Support staff include healthcare support workers, maternity care assistants and theatre support workers, some of whom go on to take nurse apprenticeships.

The Trust is one of only a few that runs its own nurse apprenticeship schemes, in conjunction with Anglia Ruskin University, meaning students can earn while they learn and have their tuition fees paid.

CUH has invited representatives from Royal Papworth to join the event, since the hospital is due to move to the biomedical campus this spring.

Chief nurse, Lorraine Szeremeta, said: “This is a day where would-be employees from any background – including school leavers - can turn up without appointment to get a greater insight into the many roles and responsibilities within the nursing and midwifery professions.”
