An H1N1 pandemic could make blood management a top priority

Managing the use of banked blood is becoming increasing important as the H1N1 pandemic in addition to seasonal flu impacts donor supplies.

Blood is a precious resource; more than 7,000 bags of donated blood are consumed daily in hospitals all over the UK. Donor shortages and concerns of disease transmission have progressively made blood management an essential focus. However, further reductions in the number of people eligible to donate blood due to flu contributes to making blood management a top priority.

CellTrans post-operative autologous blood transfusion device with its double bag configuration allows collection of up to 1,200ml of blood over a 12 hour post-operative period and offers an effective alternative to existing methods of blood transfusion for orthopaedic surgery. The large capacity of CellTrans reduces the risk of infection by maintaining a closed system when a second bag is required for transfusion.

As well as providing patient benefits, using CellTrans in total hip and knee replacements helps ensure banked blood stocks are preserved for those procedures where autologous blood transfusion is not an option.
