Reinforcing the power of clean hands and smart glove use

Earlier this month, on World Hand Hygiene Day, ARKA Medical joined the World Health Organization (WHO) and global healthcare stakeholders in championing the simple yet powerful act that saves lives: 'effective hand hygiene'.

Under the WHO’s 2025 campaign theme, “It might be gloves. It’s always hand hygiene,” ARKA Medical highlighted a crucial dual message: clean hands in the first place and appropriate glove use are indispensable in preventing healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs) - and in reducing the environmental footprint of healthcare delivery.

“At ARKA Medical, we believe that protecting life begins with our hands,” said Susana de Almeida, Scientific Director at ARKA Medical.Hand hygiene is not simply a protocol; it’s a mindset! When reinforced with the responsible use of gloves it becomes a powerful barrier against infection. But gloves must be used wisely; overuse or misuse can lead to false security and cross-contamination.”

HCAIs continue to affect millions annually, with compliance rates for hand hygiene across Europe varying between 40% and 76%, according to WHO and ECDC studies. These gaps represent a critical vulnerability in patient safety, emphasising the urgency for reinforced education, awareness, and reliable products.

At the same time, environmental challenges are escalating. Single-use gloves make up up to 34% of plastic waste in healthcare settings. Global healthcare waste is increasing by 2–3% annually, driven by heightened infection control measures post-pandemic.

ARKA Medical is tackling both concerns simultaneously through innovation and local manufacturing.

“Our R.Advance and R.Green nitrile glove lines are fully developed and produced in Portugal,” Almeida explained. “They are designed in accordance with WHO, CDC, and ECDC guidance, combining infection control performance with a commitment to sustainability. These gloves support safer care while reducing waste, aligning with the dual goal of patient protection and environmental sustainability.

“This is not just about hygiene; it’s about saving lives, protecting those who care for them, and safeguarding our planet.”
