Alcohol-related admissions in teens rise

The dramatic rise in Britain’s teenage drinking problem became evident when the latest figures from the NHS revealed that one patient in 10 admitted to hospital with alcohol problems is under 18.

The number of under-18s ending up in hospital through drink was 8,494 in 2007. According to the NHS Information Centre, this is a rise of more than 50% since 1996. A survey published with the report reveals that those aged 11 to 15 who admit to drinking consume an average of 11.4 units a week. Taking into account all ages, binge drinking has led to alcohol-related hospital admissions doubling in a decade.
