Job cuts planned over deficit

More than 200 jobs could be lost at Trafford Healthcare NHS Trust in a bid to avoid a £7 m deficit.

The Trust revealed plans to close two wards and two operating theatres and has been forced to borrow £3 m from the Government to pay for staff wages. Unison claimed that almost £400,000 had been spent on management consultants to draw up rescue plans – money the union said should be spent on staff. Following the announcement, the Department of Health reported that the majority of NHS Trusts are in balance and said that the NHS is forecasting a surplus of £1.8 bn for this financial year.
