Should all scopes be sterile?

Steris Experts’ Forum, which took place on Thursday 13 September 2018, provided visitors with the opportunity to take part in a unique debate, namely, whether all endoscopes should be sterile. Following two compelling talks, delegates were then asked to cast their vote.

Moderated by Richard Bancroft, science and technical director for Steris, the debate took the form of two talks - pro and anti – followed by an audience vote.

Prior to the debate the audience were asked whether they agree or strongly agree that all scopes should be sterile and the initial results were inconclusive: Strongly agree: 16% Agree: 16% Neutral: 35% Disagree: 27% Strongly disagree: 6%

John Prendergast, who represented ‘pro’ first took to the stage. John is senior decontamination engineer at NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership/Specialist Estates Services, and is the lead of a team that provides validation services, advice and guidance to health boards and Trusts within Wales. He works closely with Welsh governmental departments to deliver policy and strategy in this unique and often complex field.
