Open day is glimpse into hospital life

As part of its celebrations in the run up the 70th anniversary of the NHS, Cambridge University Hospitals is launching a new recruitment initiative.

For the first time there will be an open day where would-be employees from any background can turn up without appointment to get a greater insight into the many roles and responsibilities available within the nursing and caring fields.

The event will be held between 10am and 4pm on Saturday 23 June at The Deakin Centre on the Addenbrooke’s Hospital site.

Organisers welcome newly qualified, experienced, return to practice, and overseas nurses in addition to students and others interested in becoming a Health Care Support Worker (HCSW) or Theatre Support Worker (TSW) and joining the nurse apprenticeship scheme.

There will be tours of key parts of the hospital and a mock theatre to examine. On hand to offer advice will be nurses and HCSWs, and representatives from departments including learning and development, apprenticeships, the Staff Bank, and staff benefits.

Deputy Chief Nurse Sharon McNally said: “This is an opportunity for anyone interested in a career in caring to come along and find out about all the different full-time, part-time, flexible, and Bank opportunities. It is the first time we have had a day where people from any background can simply pop along without an appointment to get an insight into what it is like to work here at CUH. For qualified nurses, we can offer interviews on the day.”

The event comes just months after CUH teamed up with Anglia Ruskin University to become one of the first trusts to adopt a new four year apprenticeship scheme meaning students can “earn while they learn”.
