Urinary tract infections reduced

BARD will be highlighting a first line treatment option to help reduce healthcare associated infections (HAIs).

The Bardex I.C. silver alloy coated Foley catheter has already been introduced by the East Kent Hospitals NHS Trust. This innovative solution is proven to reduce catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) by over a third, due to the combination of slow release silver ions and hydrogel coating. This reduces the ability of bacteria to bond to the surface of the catheter.

The Bardex I.C. silver alloy coated Foley catheter is the only medical device to have received a Level One recommendation – the highest level – by the Department of Health’s Rapid Review Panel in December 2004. This was on the basis of independent studies that have shown catheter related infection rates reduced by 32-69% when Bardex I.C. was used, rather than traditional Foley catheters, as summarised by the Cochrane Collaboration’s systematic review.
