Healthcare practitioners are increasingly performing invasive procedures in home settings, which create the potential for patients to be at a greater risk of acquiring a healthcare associated infection outside the hospital setting (NICE, 2003). This increases the requirement for a portable hand hygiene system since good hand hygiene practice has been stated as the single most effective way of preventing the spread of healthcare associated infections (BMA, 2006).
