A future without Alzheimer’s?

With an estimated 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK and an expected increase to 1 million by the year 2025, there has never been a more important time for clinical studies into this devastating disease. The Clinical Services Journal asks consultant neuroradiologist Dr Emer MacSweeneyhow her team in Harley Street Medical Area are paving the way for a future without the disease.

With dementia sufferers in the UK expected to increase to 1 million by the year 2025 - and to 2 m by 2050 - dementia is the only cause of death that is still on the rise. According to Dr Emer MacSweeney, CEO and medical director at Re:Cognition Health, this is compounded by the fact that no new treatments for Alzheimer’s disease have reached the market in the last 15 years. “Many international clinical trials for new generation medications have failed and whilst this has resulted in some understandable cynicism and criticism; those who are active in this arena have reason for cautious optimism,” Dr MacSweeney warned.

The team believes that now is a very exciting time for research into Alzheimer’s disease and other causes of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia. “With each study undertaken we learn more about the disease and a study fail must never be deemed as a failure of research,” noted Dr MacSweeney. “Results from some of the clinical trials are encouraging, bringing us ever closer to developing treatments to slow down or, ideally, halt the progression of Alzheimer’s disease and/or to improve the symptoms of progressive cognitive impairment.”

Re:Cognition Health (RCH) provides centres where individuals can access international clinical trials, which it claims is changing the future for those with memory loss and other symptoms of cognitive impairment. Launched in January 2018, the company and its clinical teams provide education, clinical excellence and access to advanced treatments in a bid to help improve the lives of those with or at risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.
