Orthopaedic patients wait longest

Patients requiring orthopaedic procedures such as hip and knee replacements wait longer than any other patients to be treated on the NHS according to the latest waiting lists published by the Department of Health.

Just 25% of trauma and orthopaedic patients are treated within the 18 week target set by the Government's NHS Improvement Plan (July 2004) coming bottom of the league table, followed by 37% of oral surgery patients, 61% of cardiology patients and at the top of the table, 80% of patients requiring geriatric medicine.

"There is an urgent need to improve NHS treatment for orthopaedic patients. These results are extremely worrying." said Medical Technology Group (MTG) spokesperson, John Davis.
