NHS lacks the staff to ‘keep people safe’

The Guardian has recently reported on a warning from the Care Quality Commission’s (CQC) that many hospitals lack enough staff in some areas to ‘keep people safe’.

Results from recent inspections showed that 17 out of 26 NHS health providers had unsafe staffing levels. The health providers were told they were ‘non-compliant’ with CQC standards and did not have sufficient staff to keep people safe and meet their health and welfare needs. Some providers failed to enable vulnerable patients to articulate their needs and, in some cases, they were unable to reach drinks and warm clothing. Non-compliance notices can be given to hospitals for a variety of reasons, including staffing levels, and where non-compliance is found, the CQC will set a deadline for improvement.
