High performance ultrasound

The Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has purchased six SONOSITE iLook systems to use in both its hospitals, Gloucestershire Royal Hospital and Cheltenham General Hospital.

The equipment was purchased for use for central venous access in emergency theatres, intensive care, oncology and cardiology departments in the two hospitals. Dr Trevor Johnson, consultant anaesthetist at Cheltenham General Hospital, was instrumental in the decision to purchase the systems. “We found the iLooks to be extremely user-friendly and easier to handle than other systems. Because many different departments will be using these systems, it was important that we had a robust and high performance ultrasound system.”

According to Dr Johnson, ultrasound is the preferred method for guided central line placement. “Ultrasound guided line placement makes it much safer for the patient than the traditional anatomical landmark techniques. We purchased the SonoSite systems across the Trust to comply with The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines on central venous cannulation.”
