Work-based learning programme on decontamination of reusable devices

The new City & Guilds QCF units for the decontamination of reusable medical devices is the most recent work-based learning programme to be launched by EASTWOOD PARK TRAINING.

Comprising six separate units designed to continue to raise standards in the decontamination of medical devices and demonstrate the level of competency of those working in Sterile Services Departments (SSDs), it will enable learners to develop additional skills, knowledge and understanding while carrying out their normal duties. City & Guilds will accredit learners for each unit achieved. The six units are:

• Collection of used equipment.
• Sort used equipment and dispose of waste.
• Prepare, load and operate decontamination equipment.
• Prepare reusable medical devices for sterilisation.
• Carry out sterilisation and product release of reusable medical devices.
• Tracking and traceability, record keeping and the quality management system for medical devices.

The units form part of the National Diploma in Healthcare Support Services (Decontamination) Level 3 and can be used as recognised prior achievement in the event that learners choose to progress to the full Diploma at a later stage. The units should take around seven months to complete.
