‘Care Closer to Home’ group formed to help deliver policies

Health minister Lord Warner has announced the formation of the Care Closer to Home Demonstration Group (CCHDG) made up of members from the medical profession to help deliver the policies outlined in January’s Our health, our care, our say White Paper.

The CCHDG will comprise the Royal College of Physicians, Royal College of General Pracitioners, British Medical Association, Royal College of Surgeons, Royal College of Nursing and the NHS Confederation and others and will lead the way in looking at providing care closer to home in six specialities: ear, nose and throat; trauma and orthopaedics; dermatology; urology; gynaecology and general surgery.

Lord Warner commented: “Our health, our care, our say paves the way to bring patient care and treatment closer to home. Our plans will help people to access more specialist and other care in community rather than hospital settings.
“In planning for this change we have worked closely with the Royal Colleges and specialists associations in the run up to the publication of the White Paper. We are now taking forward the work with the support of the Care Closer to Home Demonstration Group who will ensure that delivering on shifting care closer to home is based on the best use of highly specialist skills. Over the next 12 months we will work with the six specialities at groundbreaking demonstration sites to define high quality models of care that can then be used nationwide.”
