Scanner designed for patient comfort

Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital has taken delivery of a Discovery MR750w 3.0T scanner, from GE HEALTHCARE. The new MRI system offers a range of advanced clinical functionality and has been designed for patient comfort.

The machine is able to scan patients feet first rather than head first, and introduces a larger, 70 cm patient bore. It is designed to help accommodate patients who are usually difficult to scan, such as those who are claustrophobic, elderly or very young, or those who are in pain and require a larger imaging system. A detachable table, equipped with the ability to elevate the head and neck during brain and spinal exams has been designed to make the MRI scan more comfortable, which in turn may reduce patient movement and therefore enhance image quality. Professor Erika Denton, national clinical lead for diagnostic imaging at the Department of Health, based at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, welcomed the installation. She said: “We want to ensure that from the moment a patient enters our hospital, to the moment they leave, what could be a very stressful experience is made as comfortable and stress-free as possible. This new scanner has been designed with the needs of the patient and the practitioner in mind.”
