In 2008 the Department of Health partnered the Design Council to challenge the UK design community to develop innovative products to help control the risk of Healthcare Associated Infections by making the cleaning of hospital furniture quicker, easier and more effective thereby improving the patient-hospital experience.
KIRTON, a manufacturer of specialist seating, collaborated with design agency PearsonLloyd to produce two interesting products. The Kirton DBO Commode and Patient Bedside Chair offer simple but effective solutions to reducing the spread of infection through intelligent design and manufacture. Many commodes are difficult and timeconsuming to clean as they have multiple components. The Kirton DBO Commode has a simplified construction to make cleaning quicker and easier. The Kirton DBO Patient Chair has smooth lines that encourage regular cleaning, with advanced pressure relieving characteristics to ensure patient comfort.
