Living donations role created

Reflecting the growing trend in living organ donation, with nearly one in three kidney transplants now being made possible through a living donor, the NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) has appointed Lisa Burnapp to the newly created role of lead nurse – Living Donation.

Lisa joins NHSBT from Guy’s and St Thomas’s NHS Trust, where she was previously consultant nurse for Living Donor Kidney Transplantation. Her new role will be key to further developing living organ donation in the UK, including paired/pooled and altruistic donation. The role will focus on living kidney donation and transplantation but will also support other forms of living donation, as required. The total number of living donor kidney transplants has increased by 12%, from 927 in 2008-09 to 1,037 in 2009-10. There were also 32 kidney transplants during 2009-10 through the paired living kidney donation programme, which is administered by NHSBT. Lisa is a member of a number of key advisory groups and committees and co-chairs the British Transplantation Society (BTS) Living Donor Forum.
