Vigilance reduces transfusion risks

An audience of clinicians, anaesthetists, surgeons, biomedical scientists and transfusion practitioners recently assembled at the SHOT Symposium, held in Manchester, to hear the eagerly awaited findings and recommendations of the latest report on serious hazards in transfusion.

The Clinical Services Journal reports.

The release of the annual report from the Serious Hazards Of Transfusion or “SHOT” scheme has rapidly become one of the key events, not only in the UK transfusion science calendar, but for all healthcare professionals. The UK’s only independent, professionally-led haemovigilance scheme, SHOT is essentially an anonymous and voluntary system which invites reports of major adverse events surrounding the transfusion of blood components from UK hospitals. Where risks and problems are identified, SHOT produces recommendations to improve patient safety which are then recorded in its annual report to be circulated to all relevant organisations and professional bodies – including the four UK Blood Services, the Departments of Health in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
