Driving innovation in the NHS

The SMART IDEAS programme aims to help fight healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs) by developing technologies based on ideas from NHS front line staff. Innovative prototypes of mobile isolation facilities that can be used around the patient’s bed area will be on display at Infection 2009.

The systems have many components, which will work in a modular fashion or independently, including portable hand washing station, commode and air door. The Smart Ideas programme is being run on behalf of the Department of Health by the NHS National Innovation Centre, who is working with leading industrial designers. It is part of the Department of Health’s HCAI Technology Innovation Programme, which aims to speed up the development and adoption of new technologies to help fight HCAIs.
