Designing bugs out

THE HCAI TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION PROGRAMME is an exciting initiative from the Department of Health, which aims to speed up the development and adoption of new technologies to help in the fight against healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs).

As part of the above programme, the Design Council was tasked with developing innovative new designs for existing hospital furniture and equipment – the remit being to “Design Bugs Out”. The prototypes use cutting edge techniques to rethink the bedside environment, patient transport and everyday medical equipment – making them easier to clean and thus help to reduce the risk of HCAI. Innovative design prototypes developed as part of the “Design Bugs Out” project will be on display at Infection 2009, including a patient bedside system, a self-timing cannula and a wipeable blood pressure cuff.
