Royal Bournemouth improves cardiac imaging

Toshiba has installed its first Aquilion One CT scanner in the UK at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital. The installation was formally opened by Nick Rogers, double Olympics silver medallist for sailing.

This new system, with the ability to scan an entire organ in one rotation, is also claimed to be the first dynamic CT scanner in the world to offer an anatomical cover of 16 cm and 320 simultaneous slices.

Dr. Russell Bull, Consultant Radiologist commented: “We scanned thirty-one cardiac patients in the first two weeks and the images were excellent for all scans. This was about a fifth of what we did in a whole year using our previous cardiac CT technology. The marked reduction in radiation dose, reduced scan times, increased patient throughput and consistently excellent image quality of the new system has enabled huge expansion in our service.”

Consultant cardiologist, Dr Johannes Radvan, added: “We are primarily using it in patients with low to intermediate probability coronary artery disease. The imaging quality is such that we are able to be hugely more confident about whether calcified plaques are significant or not. We have even managed to get great images in patients with rhythm disturbances.”
