Exeter hip pioneers honoured

At a recent ceremony at the Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Centre in Exeter, president of the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA), Michael Benson presented a plaque to the people involved in the landmark 1970 “Exeter hip” operation which set new standards in the field of hip implants.

“The success of the Exeter hip is outstanding,” said Michael Benson. “We at the BOA are delighted to present the Exeter team with a plaque commemorating the years of hard work and dedication that have helped to improve the quality of life for so many people around the world.” Chair of the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust, Professor Ruth Hawker MBE said: “It is a fantastic honour for everyone who has worked with the Exeter hip over the last four decades. The results produced by the team here are unique and we are pleased that their efforts are being formally recognised.” Recent clinical data showed that the survival rate for Exeter implants at the 33rd year of follow-up was nine out of ten (91.46%) for the hip, using revision for aseptic loosening as the end point. In a later study tracking the progress of patients who received the updated Exeter Universal, 100% of the stems were still intact into the fifteenth year of follow-up.
