The Institute of Decontamination Sciences recently announced a new chair in November 2025. The Clinical Services Journal spoke to Dean Burand about his plans for both the Institute and the decontamination sector. High on the agenda was the need for promoting inclusivity, collaborative networks, and investment in education.
At the IDSc annual congress, Trevor Garcia handed over the baton to Dean Burand at an exciting time for decontamination — with the National Decontamination Strategy on the horizon, and an increasing focus on sustainability and innovation. The Department of Health is seeking to upscale the reprocessing of reusable medical devices and minimise the use of single use, catapulting decontamination into the political spotlight. Dean will be tasked with guiding the sector through the challenges and opportunities that this brings.
Having worked in decontamination for over three decades, both in the NHS and private sector, Dean brings a wealth of experience to the role. During his 33-year career, he has held a wide variety of responsible roles overseeing regulatory affairs, general management, project delivery, and infection control. He is currently the director of decontamination for a private decontamination provider (IHSS) and has been an active member of IDSc for over 30 years.
During this time, he has served in various branch positions and held the position of director of governance at IDSc for three years. His knowledge and commitment are set to take the sector even further forward, as it navigates the challenges and opportunities ahead.
