EBME Expo: navigating new standards and regulations to protect patients and staff

At EBME Expo, a leading expert in clinical engineering, Richard Scott spoke to CSJ’s editor, Louise Frampton, about the vital role that EBME professionals have in ensuring medical technologies are safe and available for use. He highlighted the importance of developing the EBME role to address the changing healthcare landscape. In this video, he explains how upskilling the EBME workforce is vital, moving forward.

Richard recently retired as the Director of Medical Physics and Bioengineering at University Hospitals Bristol & Weston NHS FT. He is also a Royal Academy of Engineering visiting Professor in regulated medical technologies at Heriot Watt University, helping to develop “real world skills” in the field of healthcare technology design, adoption and management. The RAE award lets Richard share his expertise in the application of international electromedical safety standards and medical device risk management processes with those involved in developing novel medical devices. At EBME Expo, Richard hosted a session on ‘Professional Development and Career Progression’.

Richard also chairs the subcommittee responsible for common aspects of medical equipment, software, and systems standards within the IEC 60601 series of standards. Having recently retired from the NHS after 40 years, Richard is focusing on the development of key standards, which includes work on a new electromedical safety standard for medical equipment. In this interview, he discusses why this work is so important and also the help that is available to help navigate medical device regulations through his Bristol-based consultancy, Citizen MedTech.  The consultancy aims to facilitate medical device innovation through clear guidance on regulatory standards.  The organisation has a particular focus on supporting early-stage and scaling companies that need clear, practical, and affordable guidance to bring safe, compliant innovations to market.
