Transforming training for surgeons

Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has a well-deserved reputation for the quality of its services and facilities. As part of the £300 million investment, the Newcastle Surgical Training Centre has been created.

The centre delivers teaching and training in specialist surgical procedures including minimal access and orthopaedic surgery. With the desire to transform the Hospital’s teaching centre they installed BRANDON MEDICAL’s Symposia Audio-Visual System. Symposia delivers a complete range of medical AV services, targeting a number of users and applications. The system transforms the way healthcare facilities record and transmit all types of procedures, and has a significant impact on clinical training and development. The four clinical training tables at the centre are equipped with Brandon Medical’s Galaxy Ultra Operating Theatre lights with integrated cameras and monitors. A control system links the four tables to a 46” LCD screen, allowing a wide range of sources to be displayed. This includes live surgery, room cameras and recorded media. The control system also connects to two 46” LCD screens in the seminar room via wireless LAN. The surgeons use wireless for 2-way audio through the seminar room speakers. The system has a high level of interconnectivity both within the centre and video conferencing capabilities, with links for external participants.
