MedMat, which provides clinicians with a sterile area for procedures such as wound changing, has been named a winner in the NHS Smart Solutions programme aimed at identifying innovative technologies with the potential to fight healthcare-associated infections (HAIs.)
From 250 applications, nine winning products have been selected for evaluation in hospital and PCT settings, with a view to introducing them across the NHS. MedMat has patented features that promote aseptic non-touch technique and allow the same clean clinical area to be recreated for every patient in every setting. Two layers of highly absorbent material separate the dirty and the clean elements of the procedure thus reducing the risk of cross-contamination and other infection control issues. An integral, sealable waste bag contains all non-sharp waste produced during the procedure, including the MedMat itself. Clinical evaluations have also been completed at Wythenshawe Hospital and The Royal London. The MedMat was assessed on criteria such as isolation of waste, fluid absorbency, fitness for purpose and procedure time. Overall, 93.6% of users rated MedMat as “better” or “much better” than current practice.
