Minimising medication errors

Philips et al performed a retrospective analysis of mortalities associated with medication errors, which identified improper dosage (40.9%) and wrong drugs (16.2%) as the main error types in administering medication. The analysis showed that the most common causes were insufficient knowledge (44%) or communication errors (15.8%).

With the aim of minimising such risk, ARCOMED has pioneered a system that provides improved control and intelligence for infusion pump systems. The UniQueCONCEPT allows communication not only between pumps and a local control panel, but also bi-directional communication between the pumps and a central control and monitoring system.

This system can be accessed from anywhere in the hospital through a standard Ethernet network and converts infusion pumps into an intelligent system. It can be integrated into any Patient Data Management System (PDMS) or can be run as a stand-alone solution.

Marienhospital Osnabrück, Germany, was the first hospital to implement a full version of the system. Bernd Gruber, head of ICU, said that the deployment of the system has increased patient safety by significantly reducing errors and increasing the work efficiency of the nurses.
