IDSc 2023: The importance of a circular economy

The importance of a circular economy and the opportunities to increase the reuse of surgical instruments and medical devices were high on the agenda at IDSc 2023. Clinical Services Journal spoke to Daniel Coole, Managing Director at Surgical Holdings, to find out how this can be achieved.

Speaking to Louise Frampton, the editor of CSJ, Daniel Coole highlighted the need to raise awareness to ensure that decontamination units fully understand the contribution that repair services can have in achieving a ‘circular economy’. Quality must be at the forefront, to ensure patient safety, however.

He highlighted:

  • A need for accredited education to maximise the lifespan of instruments and devices.
  • How to prevent common issues relating to instrumentation and medical devices such as endoscopes.
  • The importance of ensuring quality repairs to avoid costly issues.
