COVER STORY: Releasing time to care

Few would disagree that busy nurses and clinical staff should be allowed to focus on patient care rather than spending time searching for stock. Materials management specialist Medstor has made it its mission to facilitate this and, with a thirty-year history of working with the NHS and private healthcare providers, has played an important part in streamlining processes in hospitals across the UK and beyond.

The Productive Ward: Releasing time to care™ programme is now over ten years old. Developed by the NHS Institute of Innovation and Improvement (NHSIII) and introduced in 2008, this large-scale nursing quality improvement programme was designed to improve productivity and reduce waste of time, movement, effort and stock. In this way, it would empower nursing staff to regain control of their ward and increase time to care. Although no longer in use in many of the English acute Trusts that adopted it, it is generally considered to have had a positive effect, and its legacy of ‘a place for everything, and everything in its place’ remains.

Each item in the Medstor specialist healthcare storage portfolio was developed to make nurses’ lives easier and release time to care. Products range from ward-specific mobile module carts to cabinets and high density shelving, with almost everything built in the company’s large UK manufacturing facility, ensuring consistency of supply and quality. Some of the products are standalone; others work best as part of a holistic solution involving – for example, the refit of an entire storage location. In addition to highly experienced regional managers, Medstor also has an in-house design team that can provide support and advice with designs and layout and also engineer bespoke solutions if required.

“We are immensely proud to play a part in supporting our NHS and the outstanding patient care it delivers every day. We take our commitment very seriously – the Medstor team works very closely with each hospital to make sure the project is a success. Our product portfolio is always growing and evolving in line with changing demands, but I can say with absolute confidence  that whatever the market wants, Medstor will be there to meet that need, exceeding expectations and driving efficiencies,” comments Allison Seabourne, sales director, Medstor.
