Unit uses cleaning audit system

The burns unit at Whiston Hospital, part of the St Helens and Knowsley NHS Trust, which pioneered the use of cleansing hand gel for all ward visitors 11 years ago, has taken a further step forward in its aims to prevent infection.

Staff on the specialist burns and plastics ward are using the Vernaclean Indicator to create an audit of their rigorous cleaning procedures. The tape is applied to hospital equipment to prove that it is clean.

Infection control nurse, Julie Roberts, said: “If we have any outbreaks, we use the tape on all patient equipment as it is cleaned to ensure that no item is missed and rigorous standards of hygiene are reached.”
