BMA warns of consultant shortfall

The BMA has warned Health Secretary, Alan Johnson, that more consultants are needed. In particular, there are shortfalls in the areas of emergency medicine, intensive care, trauma care, acute medicine, paediatrics and obstetrics.

The BMA said that it was especially concerned that due to financial problems, some Trusts have scaled down or put a block on recruitment plans. It said that expansion in the overall number of consultants has not been enough to ensure quality services or to drive through the improvements the Government is seeking to progress.
