‘Hospital care at home’ scheme piloted

The Royal Berkshire Hospital has initiated a six month pilot scheme to deliver hospital care at home services for patients who require acute nursing but do not need to be in hospital.

The patients remain under the clinical supervision of their hospital consultants, but are cared for by MediHome Nurses in the comfort of their own homes, typically leaving hospital three or four days sooner than they would do otherwise.

Phillipa Chapman, operations manager for trauma and orthopaedics at the hospital, commented: “ Professor Lord Darzi has emphasised the importance of getting patients home sooner to recover in their own familiar environment. The MediHome scheme gives us more options to expand on this.”
