Production of protective hoods ramped up to cope with demand in wake of COVID-19

A Chesterfield based medical manufacturer has dramatically increased production of pressure ulcer mattresses and protective escape hoods to keep up with demand during the global coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak.

Speed Plastics, which specialises in high frequency welding, has been working around the clock to cater for the increase demands of patients and healthcare systems across the world.

The company has been working flat out putting in place extra manufacturing shifts and introducing new shift patterns to meet the demand.

Thousands of escape hoods are being manufactured and sent out around the world. These hoods are filtering respiratory protective device designed to filter out particles that are dangerous to health protecting the wearer in emergency situations to ensure maximum respiratory protection. 

Demand for pressure ulcers mattress has also soared as hospital and healthcare providers seek innovative solutions to help prevent and treat bed sores in bedbound patients, as well as relieve pressure on overstretched nursing staff.

Operations Director Jane Collyer, said: “We are doing everything we can to keep up with demand and ensure these lifesaving equipments are sent out around the world. Our staff have been incredible.
