Prion decontamination

Prionzyme, available from GENENCOR, a Danisco division, is an enzyme-based prion decontamination solution for medical or dental instruments. The long latency period for vCJD and its relatively widespread distribution in the body together warrant the need for preventative measures to reduce potential iatrogenic transmission.

New research shows that a high percent of stainless steel medical instruments can harbor contaminating proteins, even when not visible under standard microscopic examination. A natural enzyme that digests and inactivates prions like those implicated in BSE and vCJD, Prionzyme reduces infectivity greater than seven logs when used as directed. The product carries the CE Mark and was tested via an in vivo biological assay using a preferred BSE 301V prion model.

The non-corrosive, environmentally sound solution eliminates the need for harsh chemicals that can pose harm to instruments and workers. Prionzyme is designed for use as a single-step soak, manually or automated in washer/disinfectors.
