Tough action on infection control

A nurse has been struck off after failing to wash her hands following the treatment of a patient with MRSA. Yvonne Zanele Cemane was found guilty of allegations of misconduct by the Nursing and Midwifery Council and a failure to observe basic hygiene practices was reported to have been a contributing factor in the decision.

The University Hospital of North Stafford has also threatened to take tough action against nurses that fail to follow new hygiene rules on uniforms. Staff are being told not to display their uniforms outside of the hospital in an effort to control the risk of infection.

Chief Nurse Sarah Byrom commented: “I have made it clear that if any member of the public sees a member of nursing staff and can see the name of that person then I shall take action with that member of staff.”
