Complementary therapy profiled

“Illuminating” and “Motivational” were just two descriptions given by delegates at the Federation of Holistic Therapists’ (FHT) lecture day examining the role of complementary therapy (CT) in cancer and palliative care. Attracting over 100 delegates, the event, held at the Royal College of Surgeons in July 2005, provided a comprehensive series of lectures, examining the current role of complementary therapy and speculating how this could be given more credibility in the future.

As the case for greater availability of CT services for cancer patients gathers pace, the FHT assembled an impressive line up of speakers for the event, including representatives from The Prince of Wales’s Foundation for Integrated Health, MacMillan Nurses, Royal College of Nursing and Christie Hospital NHS Trust. The day explored the current role of CT, including the issue of funding, the importance of research in raising the profile of the service and the part that delegates could play in bringing CT further into the mainstream. FHT marketing manager, Colin Young, commented: “Although a lot of work has already been done in terms of gaining recognition for CT from healthcare policy makers, the FHT and its members are committed to furthering the adoption of CT into all appropriate areas of healthcare, cancer and palliative care as a priority.”
