Calcium link to prostate cancer

The World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) report: 'Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity, and the Prevention of Cancer: a Global Perspective', confirms that high intakes of calcium may cause prostate cancer. However, the Prostate Cancer Charity notes that calcium is important for men with prostate cancer who are receiving hormone treatment to prevent osteoporosis.

Debbie Clayton, Information Manager at The Prostate Cancer Charity said: "This comprehensive report is of great interest and benefit to anyone who is concerned, not only about the prevention of cancer, but also about the effect of diet and lifestyle on overall public health."

She continued: "The report's findings support the information we provide to men with prostate cancer in our diet fact sheet. Lycopene and selenium are thought to help prevent prostate cancer. We await the results of a large trial called SELECT, due to be published in 2013, which will tell us more about the role of selenium in the prevention of prostate cancer.
