Brain surgery performed as day case

Britain's youngest female brain surgeon, Dr Gelareh Zadeh, has performed the UK’s first operation to remove a brain tumour as a day case, under local anaesthetic.

The technique pioneered at the University College Hospital, London, enables patients to return home the same day, when previously they would be remain in hospital for up to a week.

The first patient to receive the operation was 52-year-old Deborah Calder, who commented: "It was completely painless and everyone made me feel very relaxed. By evening I was at home with my family having a cup of tea."
