ABHI promotes UK healthtech in Texas

Europe’s largest distributor of TENS machines is setting its sights Stateside, with the help of ABHI’s comprehensive US Accelerator programme.

Surrey-based pain relief specialists TensCare, which currently exports to 40 countries globally, will be joining ABHI this April on a mission to Texas, to help establish its business in the US.

The mission marks ABHI’s 11th visit to Texas in recent years, with delegates taking in the cities of Austin and San Antonio between 29 April – 3 May 2019 to meet with the State’s most influential and senior healthcare figures.

Throughout the week they will meet with HCA St David’s Health System, Baylor Scott & White, Austin Healthcare Council, Dell Medical School, Academic Health Science Centre and University of Texas, as well as attending workshops on business-critical areas such as reimbursement.

Lisa Slavova, sales director at TensCare, said: “We are exploring the opportunity to expand our business and start exporting to the US. With the support of the ABHI, we hope to get established in the US with the view to opening our first office in Austin. The trade mission will allow us to explore the market demand for our products and understand the peculiarities of setting up operation locally.”

TensCare will also be joined on the mission by HealthTech start up Lantum, which, this month, has become the 15th company to join the ABHI Innovation Hub - a partnership with Dell Medical School at The University of Texas in Austin. Being part of the Hub means Lantum can access ABHI's introductions across the US, as well as Dell Med’s full range of facilities. The company can also tap into the expertise and knowledge of a team of senior mentors across Texas who offer bespoke support to UK companies looking to do business in the US.

Other companies taking part in the mission include ABHI Innovation Hub members Virti, Lumeon, P3 Medical and FutureNova, as well as TensCare, Imperial College Health Partners, Yorkshire and Humber AHSN and Florence.

Andrew Thelwell, chief commercial officer, FirstKind Medical, who went on a recent Texas mission, said: “It was a superbly organised visit, with plenty of very high calibre meetings with the major health related organisations in each city. As a direct result of this trip we have been able to engage with key clinicians in the areas we are targeting and are now moving forward at pace. The trip was an excellent and efficient use of time – we could not have engaged as many people as quickly as this without the relationships that the ABHI have already established.”

Over the last four and half years, ABHI missions to Texas have helped UK companies develop and strengthen partnerships across the State with a variety of organisations including academic, investor communities and professional service providers. Outcomes from the mission have included clinical trials, research collaborations, new partnerships and sales.
