Moving towards universal health coverage

Nurses are part of a huge family of healthcare workers around the world, in fact, nurses and midwives together account for nearly 50% of all the health workforce. 

There is a global shortage of health workers, with more nurses and midwives being most necessary in South East Asia and Africa. It is estimated by The World Health Organization (WHO) that to reach Sustainable Development Goal 3 on health and wellbeing, we shall need an additional 9 million nurses and midwives by 2030.1 

A three year global campaign was launched in late February and is being run as a programme of the Burdett Trust for Nursing. The Burdett Trust is running this in cooperation with the International Council of Nurses (ICN) and the WHO. The aim of the campaign is to raise the profile and status of nursing.2
