Managing and keeping track of a large fleet of mobile medical devices across three major acute hospital sites can be a serious challenge. That’s why East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust (EKHUFT) has implemented Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tracking of medical assets to support their three medical equipment libraries.
EKHUFT is one of the largest hospital Trusts in England, serving a local population of over 750,000 people with five hospitals, including the three main sites: William Harvey, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and Kent & Canterbury Hospital.
The problems
In 2014, a newly appointed medical physics management team inherited multiple challenges. These included managing a large fleet of medical devices across the three sites, shrinking budgets, increasing patient numbers, and the need to improve an inadequate Care Quality Commission (CQC) rating.
