New method of genetic analysis during pregnancy

Advalytix, a subsidiary of Olympus Life and Material Science Europa, and the Medical University of Graz, are testing a new method for the genetic analysis of fetal cells from maternal blood.

Using the non-invasive AmpliGrid method, hereditary diseases and trisomies, such as Down’s Syndrome, can be diagnosed without risk to mother or baby, even at an early stage of pregnancy. It provides a safe and cost effective alternative to invasive tests such as amniocentesis and chorionic villi biopsies. Currently in the test phase at the University of Graz, the method will be ready for market launch in two to three years.
