The importance of ethical procurement

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) recently published a number of critical recommendations to government to greatly improve safety in the delivery of surgical treatment and patient care. In this article, four of the co-authors of the report ‘Improving the working environment for safe surgical care’ discuss seven recommendations for best practice.

This summer NHS Supply Chain published its2015/16 Sustainable Development Report. The report outlined its commitment to deliver sustainability benefits for NHS customers. The Clinical Services Journal caught up with Stephanie Gibney, ethical and sustainability manager, to talk about the importance of ethical procurement and what advice she has for both buyers and Trusts.

Background

Ethical procurement is becoming a key element of managing suppliers in contract management. The responsibility is on procurement teams to demonstrate due diligence and address labour standards risks in supply chains particularly those around forced or bonded labour.
