Prontosan, a wound cleansing agent produced by Sheffieldbased B BRAUN MEDICAL, is now available on prescription.
The product cleans the wound bed thoroughly allowing clearer visual inspection for the nurse. This means that more confident decisions on the correct treatments can be made as the wound status can be assessed more successfully. It uses Betaine which has a gentle detergent effect, combined with Polyhexanide which is a preservative against bacterial growth.
Joanne Clegg, product manager for B Braun Medical, said “The concept behind Prontosan is simple. If you add a product with a surfactant effect then it is logical this will clean more effectively than a product with no surfactant.”
Prontosan has been shown in many studies throughout Europe to make some dramatic improvements in chronic and difficult to treat wounds.
