Top hospitals 2016 national award winners are announced

CHKS, a provider of healthcare intelligence and quality improvement services, has announced the winners of its Top Hospitals 2016 national awards.

These awards celebrate the success of healthcare and social care providers across the UK and internationally and include award categories for patient safety, quality of care and data quality. 

Northern Health and Social Care Trust was the recipient of the patient safety award for outstanding performance in providing patients with a safe hospital environment. The award is based on indicators including rates of hospital-acquired infections and mortality. Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust was the winner of the quality of care award. The award was made on the basis of performance in a number of areas including the length of time patients stay in hospital and rate of emergency re-admissions.

Data quality awards recognise the importance of clinical coding and data quality, and the essential role it plays in ensuring appropriate patient care. The data quality awards were given to University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in England, Southern Health and Social Care Trust for Northern. Ireland, Scotland and Wales, Aspen Healthcare – Claremont Hospital for the independent sector, and Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust was the winner in the specialist category. 

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust was awarded for patient experience and Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust won the new award, excellence in emergency care. Both awards included Friends and Family Test scores among their selection criteria. 

In addition, The New Victoria Hospital, Kingston upon Thames, Surrey, UK was the winner of its quality improvement award. This international award recognises significant improvements in patient care and patient experience, as well as staff welfare, safety and morale.
