Kidney stone treatment

Cook Urological, a supplier of private medical devices, has developed a new kidney stone extractor which it claims will significantly improve irrigation and better visibility during stone removal procedures.

The 1.7 French NCompass Nitinol Stone Extractor, features intricate multi-wire geometry and dual basket design, enabling physicians to entrap all stone fragments as small as 1.5 millimetres. It also allows for routine capture and extraction of intact stones, as well as multiple small fragments following intracorporeal lithotripsy.

The extractor is engineered to reduce trauma to the surrounding tissue, while the flexibility of Nitinol, a shape-memory alloy that is a metallic material containing nickel and titanium, allows for expedient capture and release of stones.

Kidney stones are one of the most common disorders of the urinary tract: about 3 in 20 men and 1 in 20 women in the UK will develop a kidney stone at some point in their lifetime.
