Tables: keeping pace with surgical technology

With the operating room becoming increasingly reliant on high-technology equipment it is important that the design of all devices used in this environment keep pace with these changes and new surgical techniques.

In the past 10 years there have been over 1.5 million da Vinci surgical procedures. Although the use of such state-of-the-art surgical technology is not yet widespread, there can be no doubting the fact that many surgical interventions are becoming increasingly reliant on the use of high- technology equipment, with greater computing power moving into the operating room.

There are some risks specifically associated with minimally invasive surgery techniques. These include the possibility of nerve injury and post-operative pain associated with imperfect positioning of the patient. The inability of many existing operating tables to lower sufficiently to allow all equipment necessary for laparoscopic surgery to be accommodated above the surgical site has been identified

Trumpf Medical Systems, a manufacturer of surgical tables, has worked with producers of state-of-the-art surgical equipment – including Intuitive Surgical, the company whose pioneering work in minimal invasive surgery led to the introduction of da Vinci robotic systems – to meet the specific needs of increasingly high-technology forms of surgery.
